My Dear Friend Mai,

How precious we all are to the Lord. He leaves the 99 for the one, who is isolated, vulnerable, worried, afraid, and lost.

I spoke with my dear friend Mai, who currently is serving 12 years for shooting a firearm and no one was hit. I know of more than a few men and women who have shot people and received far less time. These people are mostly men, maybe because society thinks guns and men go together. I’m not sure but all I can say is a women defending herself is seen as far worse than men shooting people because of ego, indifference, or being under the influence of alcohol. It’s viewed more like “boys and their toys,” while women are ostracized, being denied visitation of the very children they birthed.

Mai is in a place of deep hurt, carrying all the responsibility of what has happened, so my response: I speak truth. The truth that although we all want to protect our children from all hurt and danger, since we are human, we can and have easily fallen short. God relates in watching His Son suffer and being powerless to help because it was vital our sins be paid in full, that Satan’s license in our lives was permanently revoked, and we could allow His blood He willingly sacrificed to atone for our sins once and for all. Jesus also made it clear, women were valuable in His kingdom. The woman at the well, the woman with the issue of blood, and the woman caught in adultery where Jesus silenced the accusers with one command, “He who is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” (John 8:7) The truth set the woman at the well free, filling her with the Living water from the eternal well which never runs dry. The woman with the issue of blood, healed once she pressed through the crowd, touching His garment with faith for the deliverance her body, mind, soul, and strength needed. The woman caught in adultery, which the crowd intended for her alone to bear the guilt and shame, received forgiveness and direction on a new path, where she was seen for more than the mistakes of her past.

Here’s another thing I have come to know. People may still cast stones but when you know who Christ has made you to be, no number of stones can tear down what He has built. Rest assured…
