Master Carpenter

Matthew 20:28 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [a]life a ransom for many.”

Have you ever considered the profession or skilled trade of Jesus as a carpenter? He left all the glory of heaven to be born in a manger. The very trees He created He fashioned and framed into things people could use, things to simplify the lives of those around Him, while the God-Man had no place to rest His head.

Do you think His work stood out? The Master Creator? The One who made the heavens, the earth, the stars, and the seas, along with every other living creature including you and me? I’m sure He could sell His work for top price, however, I doubt He ever did. He was humble, and He cared for people. The only profit He was dying to gain was every lost soul. The tools of His trade: wood, a hammer and nails, were the very things used to put His  Living Body, the Greatest Sacrifice, on display for not only those who were alive during that time, but for the entire world, every generation, to see. While I cannot begin to imagine the excruciating pain He felt, the entire time He had us in mind…gaining our very lives to share eternal life with Him in the glory of heaven.

His glorious splendor is what Christmas is all about. Not how much profit our business made, or how many gifts you have to purchase or how many you will receive. Not the busyness or the endless list of “to do’s.” How about celebrating all that was needed, has already been done by Jesus, the Savior of the world. Christmas is a time of remembering the sheer love of Jesus Christ and the peace which comes as a result of faithful declaration, “Our sin debt is paid!”

Glory, Halleluiah!
